2024 Season Three Podcasts

In this episode of The Awareness Podcast, Susan Telford welcomes transpersonal psychologist, best-selling author, lecturer and spiritual poet, Steve Taylor, PhD.

Steve shares his own personal awakening experiences that began at a young age and that ultimately led him to devote his life to the study, investigation and process of spiritual awakening.

In his newest book, The Adventure: A Practical Guide to Spiritual Awakening, Steve explains, through his research of hundreds of people who had a profound spiritual awakening, that these experiences are not mystical or extraordinary, but rather they are more common than we realize. Many people may not even know that they are living their lives in a natural state of awakening or enlightenment.

Steve explains what he believes are the eight essential aspects of spiritual awakening that anyone can cultivate, and he discusses how guided meditations, contemplative exercises, and other practices can bring about spiritual transformation in our everyday lives.

Steve also shares a bit about his upcoming four-part live series for Center for Awakening beginning on July 8th entitled Four Steps to Awakening: Cultivating the Qualities of Spiritual Enlightenment.

For details on how you can join Steve for this interactive and experiential series visit: https://center-for-awakening.mykajabi.com/steve-taylor

Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati was born in the USA and her spiritual journey took her to India, where she has lived for many years in the Parmarth Niketan Ashram ashram.

In this edition of the Awareness Podcast, Bill Free chats to Sadhviji about her recently published memoir, Hollywood to the Himalayas: A Journey of Healing and Transformation.

Sadhviji speaks about her very conventional American life that was turned upside down by a vacation to India when she was 25 years old and in the middle of a PhD at Stanford.

It was there that she met her guru, HH Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji and her life changed forever.

In this episode of The Awareness Podcast, Susan Telford sat down with Heena Vasani to discuss Heena’s life and work using Dr Gabor Mate’s Compassionate Inquiry.

Heena had a kidney transplant 27 years ago (a topic she discussed with Jenny Beal here: https://hub.centerforawakening.org/blog/episode87)

In this conversation with Susan, Heena shared how she almost refused the transplant, because of a deep seated sense of unworthiness.

In finally accepting the donated kidney as a priceless gift, only made possible the death of another young woman she never met, Heena stepped onto a path of nurturing herself on all levels.

Heena talks about divine motherhood and how motherhood became her primary spiritual path and led her to examine all her previously undigested childhood trauma and the effects such trauma has on the body and mind.

Heena also speaks passionately about her work using Self Inquiry and describes what happens in a session.

In this new episode of The Awareness Podcast, Susan Telford sits down with award-winning filmmaker and founder of the Awaken the World Initiative, Daniel Schmidt to discuss spiritual awakening.

Learn about what Dan describes as a "pattern interrupt" and how that has played out in his own life.

Susan and Dan discuss what is meant by the term "spiritual ego" and how effort on the spiritual path can take us further from the Truth of who we are. Dan speaks eloquently about the importance of what he calls "the conditions of  no escape" and "the surrender paradox".

Dan also describes what he will be teaching in his 4-part series, Letting Stillness Reveal Itself, exclusively available in Center for Awakening's Evolve Community in March.

In her final episode for the Awareness Podcast, Jenny talks with Joost Vanhove about his spiritual journey which involved exploration of a very wide range of ideas, methods and teachings. His keen interest in spirituality was initiated by repeated childhood experiences of expansion and oneness. It wasn’t until his teens that by chance he discovered the writings of a 14th Century Belgian mystic which confirmed for him the reality of what he had experienced.

Joost describes and gives examples of the way language influences our thought processes. Jenny and Joost discuss the role of language in the spiritual path and difficulties and pitfalls in trying to understand the ancient texts and the writings of non-living sages. We agree that much more can be transmitted in face-to-face communication with a living teacher.

Joost goes on to share how over a long period he came to create his self-development model using ideas from many different traditions and from friends on the spiritual path. He describes the meaning and content of the four pillars of this model – Perception, Acceptance, Vision, Action. We discuss how this fits with the Direct Path teaching of his teacher, Francis Lucille, and the principle of living in not-knowing.

In this episode, Jenny's guest, Heena Vasani describes how her mother abandoned her at a very young age, and Jenny and Heena discuss how the trauma from that experience led to inner work over many years to find resolution and healing.

Heena describes how her spiritual journey started in her early 20’s with a profound glimpse of her true nature that occurred when she was about to undergo a kidney transplant.

Jenny and Heena also discuss:

  • The importance of fully facing the feelings that are a residue of trauma.

In this episode, Jenny's guest, Elizabeth Reninger describes how when she was very young, the birth of her sister and the death of a young child in a farming accident sparked an early curiosity about the nature of human existence. The death of her father a few years later led to the recognition that we are not the body.

Her childhood curiosity persisted into adulthood and led to a path of exploring the deepest truth. Initially this was through academic studies, but later through a variety of spiritual traditions. She was fascinated by what the various teachings have in common.

In meeting Thich Nhat Hhan, something that had been missing was revealed. As a result, the direction of her life changed completely. She describes how the process of awakening happened through a series of shifts. Understanding and expression of what she experienced came later.

Jenny and Elizabeth discuss:

  • The connections between Buddhism, Taoism and Advaita Vedanta, and the ideas from each of these traditions that have had a lasting significance for Elizabeth
  • The benefits of having a living Teacher.
  • How a teacher can help at an early stage of the spiritual path and in the stabilization process
  • What living in not-knowing means in practical life.

Join Bill Free for this episode of Conversations in Truth, as he welcomes Chris Beckett for WISDOM FREED: The Everyday Spiritual Path to Liberation.

Chris shares that Wisdom Freed is about pointing your spirituality towards the most important part of your life - the everyday when you're working, going to the supermarket or catching up with a good friend.

Through Micro Meditations - Simple, quick moments of presence that you do throughout your day, you allow the natural process of awakening and liberation to unfold.

But moments of presence also need to be supported with letting be - points in your day where you stop keeping tabs on yourself. Like when you're lost in conversation or deep within nature in a walk in the woods.

Bill and Chris discuss how these two practices support your unfolding together.  The danger of just practicing presence is that it can become a strategy to avoid the messy parts of life. The pitfall of just letting yourself be is that you act out unconsciously harming yourself and others.

We have all heard the phrase “spiritual awakening,” but do you really know what it means, especially for those of us who are living an “ordinary” life in the world?

Perhaps you have an image of what you think it should look like, feel like, be like?

In this episode of Living an Awakened Life, Susan and Helen go right back to first principles to discuss what spiritually awakening really is, how it shows up in our lives and the changes it brings.

Helen shares her own experience of awakening; what she describes as “the perfect meditation” and offers a guided practice to support you in being present with whatever is going on in your mind and body without trying to change anything.

Susan and Helen discuss whether a living teacher is always necessary and what is meant by the ”divine feminine.”

In this week's episode, Jenny's guest Venkatesh Deshpande describes how his upbringing in a religious Hindu family led initially to spiritual questioning about the nature of God and then to the practice of Transcendental Meditation.  Venkatesh discusses how he came to give up his successful career in business to follow a path of self-knowledge.

He outlines the rigorous daily program of work and study at the Sivananda ashram, where he followed a progressive path of both Jnana and Bhakti yoga. A spontaneous decision to visit the Ramana Maharshi ashram at Tiruvannamalai, resulted in him falling in love with Ramana’s teaching and seeing that all the sages were saying the same thing – that this inward journey is the most important purpose of life.

Jenny and Venkatesh go on to discuss a number of aspects of Ramana’s teaching, including the basic ‘who am I’ practice, how to overcome the frustration of thoughts that keep flooding back, and how to deal with blank states. He explains the importance of questioning, and the connection between questioning, openness and not-knowing. Supported by his faith in the teaching and a strong desire for liberation he describes how he discovered the unchanging, inner joy of living as pure consciousness, 'an instrument in the hands of the Lord.'

In this episode, Marc describes how he became a mindfulness trainer and life coach and then went on to explore his true nature more deeply, initially with Jan Geurtz, a non-dual teacher specializing in love and relationships, and later with Rupert Spira and Francis Lucille.

During the COVID pandemic he went deeply into what he really knew for himself. Understanding the non-dual teaching is a starting-point, but it takes courage to really live as consciousness, with no ground beneath your feet.

Marc has a serious and incurable medical condition called ‘restless legs syndrome’ which causes chronic lack of sleep. He explains how living in not-knowing, giving up trying to be the controller, and allowing life to unfold spontaneously provides the greatest relief.

Jenny and Marc discuss how to provide a bridge from the duality of conventional mindfulness to effortless non-duality.

In this podcast, Jenny and Hѐlen discuss the Dharma Art of Miksang, a form of contemplative photography, and its role as a spiritual practice on the path of beauty.

Hѐlen describes how difficulties in her life led her to the Dharma Arts and Shambhala Buddhism. Miksang practice starts from being open and available. We have a tendency to overlook moments of pure, fresh seeing, and conceptualise what we see, giving everything a name and a form. In Miksang, instead of photographing objects, we express the simple, direct and brilliant experience of a flash of perception, before the mind has applied any concepts to it. It’s an effortless way of meeting the sacred world at any moment during daily life. When we let go of likes and dislikes, good and bad, and the egoic desire to create a beautiful photo, we discover beauty all around us, shining in the ordinary.

To find out more about Hѐlen and the Dharma Art of Miksang, including details of her online and European events you can visit her website here: https://miksang.eu

In this edition of the Awareness Podcast, Ann McIlraith describes her journey to the non-dual understanding through exploration of the body. She explains how T’ai Chi brings a feeling of openness and transparency of the body. The body can teach us so much, and T’ai Chi takes you beyond the body.

Jenny and Ann discuss how the practice of T’ai Chi relates to the investigation of the body that Francis Lucille teaches, and the discovery of our borderlessness through which the feeling of separation that resides in the body dissolves. Ann describes how in group work, the sense of being contained in a physical body disappears and you are experiencing the energy field in which all the physical bodies are moving. It’s a way of transcending the body while inhabiting it.

“When you’re feeling that your heart will burst with joy, when you’re feeling love, or beauty, when something touches you completely – that’s it. It’s simple.”

How can science and spirituality work together to discover new insights into the nature of ourselves and the universe?

Professor Hoffman also talks about his practice of meditation, and describes the benefits it brings to his scientific work, to his everyday life, and to his understanding of his true nature.

In A Course in Miracles, Honesty is defined as consistency.  During this podcast Cyndi and Rona discuss what that means and how it can be used as a very effective Tool for Awakening.

In this episode, Francis describes what it means ‘to live in not-knowing’ and explains the distinction between nonduality and nondualism. We discuss the different ways in which we can approach the hidden knowledge of awareness. After the first stage in which we discover the absolute reality of pure consciousness, Francis explains why it is essential to recognize that this one reality shines as this world. That’s the only way to be stable in this understanding. Otherwise, we feel nostalgia for the state of pure awareness, and then there is suffering.

We went on to discuss practice. Francis explained that after having a first glimpse of the truth, it’s a lifetime assignment. The goal is happiness. Practice converges with life. You don’t stop the practice when you are enlightened. After enlightenment, you practice all the time. But it’s important to make sure your practice comes from love and enthusiasm. Otherwise you stay on the path of self-improvement for lifetime after lifetime. How could more effort, more suffering take you closer to the effortless path?

Join Bill Free and Hans Wilhelm for a conversation about their spiritual paths. Among many other things, Bill and Hans discuss reincarnation, karma, consciousness and illusion and what they have both learned on their spiritual journeys.

2022 Season One Podcasts

In this episode, Lisa discusses what lead to her awakening in 2018 after decades of spiritual seeking. She discusses her practice of A Course in Miracles as both committed student and beloved teacher and how the teachings of Rupert Spira and other teachers of nonduality led her not only to Self-realization, but also to a deeper appreciation and understanding of the Course.

Lisa also discusses her upcoming series of live workshops, The Wholeness Experiment, which launches on January 9th 2023.

Tune in to this episode of the Living in Oneness Podcast as Simone describes her journey in The Great Mystery. Her desire for Truth leads her from a life in Law into one of study and service. Learn how an interest in NVC (Non Violent Communication), Dyads, and Trauma Healing has shaped her current work.

In this Living in Not-Knowing podcast, with Anne Hay, we trace her path from early glimpses of peace and freedom, through a range of spiritual disciplines, to reach the recognition that organized practice was not going to bring what she was looking for.

Several times she was brought face-to-face with death through an early traumatic experience, the death of her parents, cancer and other health issues. She describes how, as a result, the fear of death eventually melted away.

The freedom of not-knowing has been a recurring theme throughout Anne’s life, guiding her decisions and leading her inexorably towards that for which she truly longed.

It was eventually through Direct Path meditations that she found her way back home, to discover the peace and happiness which is our true nature. Life now is easy. Activities just come naturally from joy, rather than a sense of duty. Everything that arises is welcomed. There’s no sense of lack, or sense of impending doom. She knows and feels that all will be well.

Bill’s guest in this episode is singer/songwriter Neda Boin.

Neda is a well known teacher of A Course in Miracles and the creator of The Voice Liberation Program.

Listen as Neda explains what Voice Liberation is and how it works to heal unconscious residue, guilt or trauma that may be hidden in the mind that thinks itself to be separate.

In this episode, Bill Free discusses his path to spiritual awakening, what living a life of peace and happiness looks like in his life. He discusses the inspiration behind the Teachers of God Foundation, Pure Presence Conferences and his latest project, Awakening Mind Films.

Bill is traveling to India in December and will be presenting a 2 part live Masterclass series from India entitled Living a Life of Peace and Happiness.

In this Living in Not-Knowing podcast, Lawrie Smith, talks about her spiritual journey and her life as a judge in Canada. Everyone loves truth, justice and fairness. These are inherent attributes of our true nature. We discuss the purpose of the legal system and the various ways in which the concept of ‘living in not-knowing’ is enshrined in the practice of law. Judges and jury members are required to listen to the facts from a position of complete openness. We discuss the concept of ‘no reasonable doubt’ versus absolute certainty. We can apply the same principles in our daily lives. We all have prejudices based on our conditioning, but mostly they are hidden. Serving on a jury or working as a judge can bring these to light. Lawrie goes on to describe how applying the concept of living in not-knowing in daily life brings freedom and happiness.

In this episode Bill interviews Spiritual Teacher and author Caverly Morgan and the focus will be her newest book The Heart of Who We Are, which is endorsed by many spiritual leaders including Rupert Spira.

“Transcendence and transformation. In The Heart of Who We Are, Caverly deftly holds two seemingly opposing truths—our shared being of oneness whose nature is peace, and our shared world of apparent separation and its suffering—and invites us to explore how our true nature might find its fullest expression in both ourselves and the collective. This beautiful and
courageous book not only provides a way for us to explore who we are and how we are in the world but stands as a shining example of what it means to do both.”

-Rupert Spira, teacher of nonduality, author of The Nature of Consciousness
and Being Aware of Being Aware

When Susan sat down to interview Tom Das for The Awareness Podcast, she did not expect something extraordinary to happen live on the show. As Tom is giving a 4 part live workshop in November, Susan wanted to find out more about him, how his spiritual journey has unfolded and how he became a spiritual teacher. However, when Susan asked this question,

“Let's imagine just for the sake of the next, 10 minutes or whatever that I have come to you and said, I've had a glimpse of my true nature. I know that I'm not just this, I've had some spiritual experiences, but I don't feel as if I'm in a state of total freedom because I'm still vacillating between feeling that I'm not this body, mind, personality and feeling very much contracted inside it and reacting to the things that are happening, help me to see.”

The podcast changed from an interview to a holy encounter that led Susan to taste her true nature in a deeper way than ever before, while at the same time realizing it was something she had always known.

When you tune into this conversation with Cyndi Krupp and Rev Yolanda you will be gifted with an experience of the Joy that comes from making the choice to live your most authentic self regardless of the story and life challenges.  You will also have the opportunity to experience the spirit inspired music of Rev Yolanda as she sings the song that was written through her entitled simply, Home.

In this Living in Not-Knowing podcast, the sculptress Maureen Thienpont describes how a traumatic event in her life awakened and clarified her understanding that there is more to each of us than just a body-mind. She explains how the events of life itself have guided her towards an ever-deeper recognition of the unity of self with all that exists, and led her to her teacher, Francis Lucille. Her work as an artist producing sculptures from stone is underpinned by not-knowing. She is guided towards a stone, without knowing why. And when she starts to work with the stone she has no idea what form will emerge. We discuss the importance of approaching life without expectations and surrendering to what is. When intuition and connection are not flowing, she leaves the stone until the right moment arises, which may be as much as a year later. To do otherwise would be disrespectful. She gives examples of how she applies this same approach of openness, trust and intuition, to helping friends who are in difficulties.

Bill and Rupert discuss letting go of the tradition, the practice, the thing that brings you to understanding awakening and allowing what's next to take its place. Rupert speaks about how fundamentalism can keep you stuck in concepts and that you can't ignore what's happening or think it is all just illusion. You have to look to effectively resolve the attachment and then letting go of the shore just happens.

In this episode Susan and Stephan discuss the differences between the progressive and direct paths. Stephan brings a unique perspective on both approaches as he is a former Zen monk who later studied under Jean Klein and Adyashanti and is himself a teacher of nonduality, as well as being a psychotherapist.

Susan and Stephan reflect on the differences between an intellectual understanding of the teachings and Self-realization and what it is that wakes up.

Stephan gives a flavor of what he will be teaching in his live 4-part Workshop in October: Discover Your Natural State of Awakened Awareness

In this episode Cyndi and her guest Susan Telford talk about their experiences with living from a place of conscious awareness. Tune in to discover how a shift in perspective can bring more peace and joy into any situation.

In this edition of the Living in Not-Knowing podcast with Jenny Beal, Sam Visser discusses his spiritual journey which included time spent in an Osho commune, before coming into contact with nonduality and the Direct Path. He goes on to describe the approach he uses in his work as a psychotherapist, helping his clients to see for themselves that suffering never happens in the now. Situations don’t cause suffering, it's only our resistance to them that causes suffering.

When you can’t change the situation, just surrender. Surrender always points to the now. Life is uncertain, but embracing that uncertainty leads to freedom.

Sam goes on to explain how he came to lose all fear of death of the body. Life is a blessing.

In this Living in Not-Knowing podcast with Jenny Beal, Rachna Chowla describes her spiritual journey from a traditional Vedanta school, via the Buddhist tradition of the Dalai Lama and the poetry of Rumi, to arrive at the Direct Path teaching of Rupert Spira and Francis Lucille. It was through this teaching that she discovered how love and beauty can become an integral part of our spiritual life. She goes on to discuss how the nondual understanding has influenced both her practical life as a doctor and her creative life as a poet, and the changes that have occurred in her approach to difficult circumstances. She describes the ever-growing joy and freedom of being open to all that arises. Finally, she reads one of her poems that depicts the way creativity manifests spontaneously and effortlessly when she rests in not-knowing.
